WHY OIL DETECTION SYSTEMS MATTER

Reliable oil content monitoring prevents over-limit discharges and keeps operations running smoothly. These systems provide operators with instant, accurate data — protecting the environment, maintaining legal discharge standards, and avoiding costly downtime.

Oil Content Monitors

An Oil content monitor is a device for real time sampling and measuring of the oil content in a moving  stream of water. The new IMO/MEPC 107 (49) oil content monitors for oil water separators perform several functions including preventing illegal “over limits” discharges that occur when the oil content is above 15 ppm, by either shutting down the separator or by putting the separator into a recirculation or recycle mode———where the oily bilge water is sent back to the oily wastes holding tanks.

These newer monitors also have the ability to alarm the operator with audible and visual alerts as well as having dry contacts out that can be wired into a ship’s or oil platforms main controls systems.

SkimOil ® ‘s oil content monitors log the past 18 months discharge events, and it is this log——-that the USCG uses to determine that discharges are in compliance and legal. The log can be downloaded thru the onboard output port on the monitor. These monitors are sealed and secured to prevent any tampering. Our marine oil water separators can be USCG/ABS/BV certified only when they use an approved monitor.

At SkimOil ® we use oil content monitors on our BRUTE marine oil water separators , Bilge Filters and for industrial process measurement purposes. Our marine oil water separators can be USCG/ABS/BV certified only when they use an approved monitor.

Oil Content Monitors — Bilgmon 488

Bilgmon 488

The IMO Res. MEPC.107(49) resolution regulates the design and performance of the oily water separators (OWS)and the 15 ppm Bilge Alarms for machinery space bilges of ships. Each ship must have a certified 15 ppm bilge alarm for measuring the oil content in the discharge water. The 15 ppm Bilge Alarm type BilgMon 488 is approved and certified in accordance with the latest IMO resolution MEPC.107(49) and in addition, designed to meet the particular needs from the crew when processing the bilge water.

These oil content monitors are our default monitor for our BRUTE OWS and bilge filter and come with a 5 year certification which means it is certified to meet IMO/MEPC 107 (49) requirements for 5 years——-as long as the seal on the unit is not broken or missing. After 5 years it has to be re-calibrated to be certified as compliant with regulations. Big trouble awaits you if your monitor is out of certification because you would then be out of compliance with IMO/MEPC 107 (49) requirements and operating illegally. While there are a few recalibration services around, doing that  takes you out of operation. The solution or work-around for that is simply getting a new measuring cell and simply installing it on your oil content monitor and you are then instantly recertified for another 5 years——-as long as you don’t break the seal on the measuring cell. It’s a simple quick installation and you’re back in business and back to being certified. Contact us directly for a certified replacement measuring cell.

SAM’S (Stand Alone Monitoring System)

Some applications for our oil/surface skimmers , oil water separators or oilsmart filters require automatic real time monitoring of different liquid streams. We put together the Stand Alone monitor system (SAMS) originally as a retrofit, but soon started incorporating these stand alone right into a new system. We can build it up with all controls on a stand/skid , a dedicated sampling pump if needed.    NEED A SIMPLE SYSTEM ?   it can be almost plug and play

For the marine/maritime industries we can even furnish these SAMS with oil content monitors for ships, drilling rigs, wells, O&G exploration and even on moon pool skimming jobs. These units are compliant with IMO/MEPC 107 (49) regulations and meet all USCG/ABS/CE/BV requirements. This is pretty much a world wide standard for the marine and offshore petro operators.  WORLD CLASS EQUIPMENT

Need special controls or monitoring ?

Need to monitor fluid conditions real time?

Can do Ph, TDS, TSS? chlorides, phosphates etc etc?

What do you want to monitor?

We also furnish stand alone monitor (SAMS) systems for discharge, monitoring and process control applications. These stand alone fluid content monitor systems generally take a small side-stream or pumped sample from source-and can be interlocked to PLC (or ?) for controlling your? what do you need?

Bottom LINE on real time sampling:

SAMS can be built to your specs, to include dedicated feed pumps and several levels of explosion proof XP enclosures and controls. These SAM systems can be mounted on their own stand and/or rack/bulkhead mounted. Let’s chat this up, give SkimOIL ® a call!

Oil Content Monitors — Smart Cell
Oil Content Monitors — Smart Cell

Smart Cell

The  “SmartCell” oil content monitor meets the requirements of MEPC 107 (49) for monitoring of 3 oil types: Fuel, Diesel and Emulsions. By utilizing the “SmartCell” Detector Array Technology,  the OCM analyses all three oil types simultaneously without the need for re-calibration. A manual cell clean devise is included as standard to easily enable routine maintenance. Optical cell fouling is recognized as a leading cause of monitor malfunction or incorrect reading. By simple operation of the manual clean device, the “SmartCell” remains in optimum operating condition. The SMART CELL – BILGE Monitor has been designed specifically for use in conjunction with 15ppm oily-water separator units. It has a specification and performance which meets the requirements of the International Maritime Organisation specifications for Bilge Alarm Units contained in Resolution MEPC 107 (49).

TD-107 FLUORESCENCE OIL CONTENT MONITOR

The TD-107 Fluorescence Oil Content Monitor (OCM) is a 5 ppm or 15 ppm bilge alarm for oily water separators based on fluorescence detection technology. The TD-107 Oil Content Monitor is fully certified by the US Coast Guard for use under IMO MEPC 107(49). Fluorescence makes the TD-107 is immune to interference from turbidity or particles/sediments in the bilge which impact competing “light scatter” oil content monitors. Because silt / algae / iron oxide / mud, junk and other particles do not fluoresce at oil’s wavelength, they cannot interfere as a ‘false positive’ high alarm that will keep the oily water separator in re-circulation mode without ever pumping down the oily waste holding tanks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your oil content monitors compliant with marine and industrial regulations?

Yes. Our monitors meet IMO/MEPC 107(49) requirements and are certified by USCG, ABS, BV, and CE for use on ships, offshore platforms, and industrial sites.

How do oil content monitors help prevent over-limit discharges?

When oil content exceeds 15 ppm, the monitor automatically shuts down the separator or switches it to recirculation mode, preventing excess oil from being discharged. It also provides audible and visual alarms and logs all discharge events for up to 18 months, giving operators a clear record of system activity.

What detection technologies are available?

We offer SmartCell multi-oil type analysis (monitors fuel, diesel, and emulsions without recalibration) and fluorescence-based monitors (immune to turbidity and particle interference) for reliable, real-time results.

How is maintenance and re-certification handled?

Select models feature a five-year certification. After five years, simply replace the measuring cell for instant re-certification—no need to remove the unit from service. Manual cleaning devices help keep the system accurate.

Can I get technical support or help with installation?

Absolutely. SkimOIL ® provides ongoing technical support for all equipment, including guidance on installation, operation, and maintenance.
