WHY MOON POOL SKIMMERS MATTER

How It Works: Set, Skim, Separate
Offshore operations require reliable oil recovery systems that work quickly and efficiently in confined spaces. These compact skimming packages combine floating recovery with dependable oil-water separation, helping crews manage surface oil without adding complexity or downtime.
Regulatory Compliance
- IMO MEPC 107(49) — the BRUTE separator is designed and certified to meet these requirements.
- USCG approved — Coast Guard compliance for U.S. waters.
- ABS and BV certifications available on request.
- All vessels over 400 Gross Tons (GT) are required to have an OWS on board, and regulations are increasingly extending to smaller boats.
- Tamper-proof oil content monitor : sealed and secured. USCG uses the discharge log to verify compliance.
- ISO 9001 Certified manufacturing — built in the USA.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the Moon Pool system sized for my platform?
We size around your expected oily-water volume and the moon pool’s working environment. The BRUTE separator family covers 2.2 GPM up to 45 GPM, and we match the floating weir skimmer and hose set to that flow rate. Tell us your vessel size, expected oil volume, and any specific compliance constraints, and we’ll spec the right combination.
What's the typical discharge quality?
Less than 3.2 PPM oil in independent tests — well under the 15 PPM IMO maritime requirement. The TPH monitor on the BRUTE can be set anywhere from 1 to 15 PPM depending on your specific discharge requirement.
Is the Moon Pool system USCG approved?
Yes — the BRUTE separator at the core of the system is USCG approved and certified to IMO MEPC 107(49). ABS and BV certifications are also available on request. The integrated oil content monitor logs every discharge event for USCG audit compliance.
What happens if oil content exceeds 15 PPM during operation?
The system automatically goes into recirculation or shutdown mode (configurable) so no oil-contaminated water makes it overboard. The discharge log records the event. When clean operation resumes, the system returns to normal discharge automatically.
Can the system be installed in hazardous areas?
Yes. Custom designs are available to vary specifications including hazardous-area options. Specify your area classification when quoting and we’ll build to suit.
What power options are available?
Single-phase: 110/120 VAC or 220 VAC. Three-phase: 210/220, 380/415, 460/480, or 575/600 VAC. Either 50 or 60 Hz. Max amperage 3.3–7.7 amps; we recommend a 15-amp circuit. Pretty much any shipboard or platform power configuration is supported.
What's the difference between the BRUTE and the Mini-Brute?
The BRUTE family covers 2.2 GPM to 45 GPM and is the standard Moon Pool component. The Mini-Brute is a smaller marine OWS for vessels with smaller flow needs. We’ll recommend whichever fits your platform — call us with your specs.
